Installation Instructions For RK Detectable Warning Mat
RETROFIT MODEL

Our detectable warning mat is an extremely durable polyurethane blend product that, when properly installed, will give years of useful service. Standard sizes are 2' x 4', 2' x 5' and 3' x 4'.

Total time to install & open to pedestrian traffic - 30 minutes.
Remove all dust/debris from the area where the mat is to be installed.

Place the mat in the desired position. Any required trimming is easily done with a sharp pair of scissors.

With the mat in the desired position, outline the mat with 2″ tape. (Duct tape works best as it is the strongest and will be easiest to remove.) The tape should be no more than 1/16″ from the mat. DO NOT get the tape under the mat. (Figure 1)

Clean the back of the mat with a mild solvent such as alcohol or acetone. (Figure 2)
Figure 2

Use a 3/16″ V-notch trowel (Figure 3) to evenly distribute the adhesive dispensed from tubes in a caulking gun. (Figure 4)
BE SURE all edges and corners are fully coated – one reason for the tape. A 2′ X 4′ mat requires approximately 25 oz. of adhesive (more if the pavement is extremely rough). Adhesive is supplied by Road Kare in 10 oz. or 28 oz. tubes. See adhesive restrictions below.

To install the mat, hold one end up and align the other end with the tape. Insure proper alignment because once the mat is down, there will be little chance to move it. Lower the other end while pressing on the center of the mat to be sure no air is trapped under the mat. When in place, be sure all edges are completely sealed in the adhesive. (Figure 5)

Remove the tape, wait an additional 10 minutes, and the installation is complete.

ADHESIVE RESTRICTIONS: RK Detectable Warning Mats should not be installed if pavement is below 40˚F. Mats may be installed on slightly damp pavement as the adhesive is a moisture cure product. In extremely dry areas, it is advisable to mist water on the pavement before spreading the adhesive.
