Road Kop Speed Cushion.
A recycled rubber traffic calming device. Designed to slow traffic but have a minimal effect on emergency response time.

RK Speed Breakers.
3 sizes plus modular design allows virtually any length or configuration for all requirements.

RK Detectable Warnings
ADA Compliant detectable warning mats. Available as a glue down or concrete inset model

  RK Flexible Kurbing
Flexible Kurbing is made in the USA of durable recycled rubber.

All of our rubber products are manufactured using US recycled rubber. In 2009, we used approx. 610,000 lbs of recycled rubber. That equated to keeping approx. 31,000 tires out of land fills last year.

Road Kop - Speed Cushion Specifications

Design Specifications are based on Road Kop preformed speed cushions as manufactured by Road Kare International, 530 Jesse St., Grand Prairie, TX 75051.

In order to consistently meet the following specifications, the cushions shall be manufactured in the USA by an ISO 9002 approved company. Other manufacturers may be approved with prior approval from architect/engineer.

DIMENSIONS

The speed cushions are modular in design with the standard width being 6'6" and standard lengths being 6'8" and 10'0". Both width and length are easily adjustable by adding or changing modules. The speed cushion has a flat top with a height of 3". The entrance and exit ramp gradient is 1 in 10 and the side ramp gradient is 1 in 4. The entrance, exit and side ramps provide a smooth transition to the pavement with the maximum "step" in this transition not to exceed 1/2".

MATERIAL

The speed cushion modules are made from 100% recycled rubber and polyurethane binder, making the speed cushion impervious to motor fuels, oils, solvents, road salts and outdoor environments. The rubber is obtained from recycled truck and tractor tire treads which is all rubber. The rubber, in fiber form up to 1/2" long, contains no rubber dust, granules or fly that will weaken the product. They are compression molded and have the following properties:

  • Shore A Hardness - 65 minimum
  • Specific Gravity - 1.13
  • Skid Resistance - 89 (dry)
  • Tensile Strength - 500 psi minimum
  • Deform Rate - None (100% recovery after compression)

The speed cushions are black in color. The standard factory marking (optional) is 2 white reflective arrows made of pavement marking tape and molded into the rubber for long term durability. The standard arrows are 16" wide by 27" high.

INSTALLATION

Modular sections of the speed cushion are linked together with metal dowels to ensure stability and equally distribute stress loading.  Modular sections are fastened to the pavement using supplied 10 mm OD stainless steel lag bolts 4 3/4" long and 10 mm stainless steel washers.  The standard size speed cushion (6' 6" wide x 6' 8" long) fastens to the pavement with forty (40) lag bolts.  The extended size speed cushion (6' 6" wide x 10' 0" long) uses fifty-four (54) lag bolts.  Galvanized or electro-plated fasteners shall not be acceptable.  The lag bolts are inserted into pre-drilled 9/16" OD holes in the pavement that have been filled with the two part quick-set resin just prior to insertion of the high-density polyethylene pavement anchor that is 9/16" OD x 3/8" ID x 4" long.  The resin used must set quickly and cure completely in 45 minutes or less at temperatures as low as 68°F (faster at higher temperatures - slower at lower temperatures).  This allows the site to be opened to traffic immediately after installation.  Epoxy resin or similar products requiring cure times in excess of 45 minutes shall not  be acceptable.  Each hole in the modular section is then filled with a rubber cap after installation to cover the bolt head.

All necessary bolts, washers, anchors, dowels, resin and rubber caps are supplied with each speed cushion.
